Platte D. Lyman, a son of Amasa Lyman and Eliza Partridge Lyman, was born on August 20, 1848, in a wagon on the Platte River. He was called by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help Silas S. Smith head the San Juan Mission in 1879, and essentially took over command of the expedition during Smith's prolonged absences. Rulon S. Wells III (1919-2008) was born 30 April 1919, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Rulon S. Wells Jr., and Helen Clawson Wells. Wells received his B.A. from the University of Utah in 1939, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1941 and 1942 specializing in Philosophy and Science of Languages.
